Dal 5 giugno al 26 luglio 2025, Cadogan Gallery presenta Down to the Roots, la prima personale di Pia Ortuño a Milano che segna l’inizio della collaborazione tra l’artista e la galleria londinese. Dal corpus di opere ibride presenti in mostra – dipinti, installazioni e sculture – emerge il vero protagonista della produzione artistica di Ortuño, ovvero la ricerca e la sperimentazione tecnica. Di origini costaricane, l’artista reinterpreta materiali industriali, metalli in decomposizione e pigmenti naturali per evocare tradizioni, rituali e frammenti di memoria.
Come suggerisce il titolo Down to the Roots, la personale ospitata da Cadogan Gallery racconta di un viaggio a ritroso verso il ricordo della terra madre dell’artista, la Costa Rica.
Nelle sue opere emerge una malinconia sottile: l’eco di un altrove lontano ed evanescente ma non del tutto dissolto; l’artista è scissa tra il senso di appartenenza a San José e Londra, città in cui vive e lavora. Le creazioni di Ortuño si distinguono per una spiccata matericità e dinamicità, che le rende capaci di dialogare fisicamente con lo spazio.
I contrasti della produzione artistica di Pia Ortuño vengono rivelati dalla scelta di temi legati alla tradizione costaricana che si intrecciano al desiderio di sperimentazione materica, tecniche innovative e soggetti astratti.
L’uso di sale, legno, chiodi, ruggine, oli e pigmenti rimarca la profonda connessione con la cultura d’origine, rievocando i paesaggi del suo paese, allo stesso tempo, l’uso di materiali atipici come blocchi di legno modulari e l’uso dello scalpello per plasmare la superficie pittorica, le permettono di rivoluzionare la composizione dell’opera, rendendo la sua produzione un gioco tra esperimento e soluzione, un laboratorio tra echi e memorie.

Pia Ortuño (1996, San José) vive e lavora a Londra. Ha conseguito un master in pittura presso il Royal College of Art di Londra (2022) e una laurea in Belle Arti presso l’Università della Costa Rica (2019). È stata apprendista di Jimenez Deredia a Carrara, in Italia. Ortuño ha esposto nel Regno Unito e a livello internazionale. La mostra nella sede milanese della galleria segna l’inizio della collaborazione tra l’artista e Cadogan Gallery.
From June 5 to July 26, 2025, Cadogan Gallery presents Down to the Roots, Pia Ortuño‘s first solo exhibition in Milan, marking the beginning of the collaboration between the artist and the London gallery. The exhibition features a body of hybrid works—paintings, installations, and sculptures—that highlights the true protagonist of Ortuño’s artistic production: the research and technical experimentation. Of Costa Rican origin, the artist reinterprets industrial materials, decaying metals, and natural pigments to evoke traditions, rituals, and fragments of memory.
As the title Down to the Roots suggests, the solo exhibition hosted by Cadogan Gallery embarks on a journey into the past, exploring memories of the artist’s homeland, Costa Rica.
A subtle melancholy emerges in her works: the echo of a distant and fleeting elsewhere, yet not completely dissolved; the artist is torn between the sense of belonging to San José and London, the city where she lives and works. Ortuño’s creations stand out for their strong materiality and dynamism, enabling them to physically engage with the space.
The contrasts in Pia Ortuño’s artistic production are revealed through her choice of themes linked to Costa Rican tradition, which intertwine with the desire to experiment with materials, use innovative techniques, and favor abstract subjects. The use of salt, wood, nails, rust, oils, and pigments underscores a deep connection to her cultural roots, evoking the landscapes of her country.
At the same time, the implementation of atypical materials such as modular wooden blocks and the chisel to shape the painted surface allows her to revolutionize the composition of the work, making her production a dialogue between experiment and solution, a laboratory of echoes and memories.
